2011 Festival and Games
Report from the Aug 22 James topwn Festival: Western New York was very excited to see the Stewarts at this young (4th year) highland game, and our tent rounded out the clan tents to the number of 7. Seldom was there a quiet moment as 6 pipe bands took turn parading and playing, providing continuous music,in the clan area. The trebuchet ploy in entertaining children while their Stewart parents spent time in the tent worked well, 1 new membership was taken. 2 other visitors took forms with the promise of sending them in. Of particular note was visitor Paul Johnson of Jamestown, NY, who is interested not only in membership but also helping at the tent. A follow up email will be sent soon to encourage his attendance in the Stewart tent at the Niagara Highland Festival held in September.
Of particular note were the torrents of rain which began at 1:30. The third siege began shortly after closing ceremonies, in which Kevin and Mouse Man Dave participated. With no end in sight, we waded through ankle deep water, hauling our tent and contents to the truck. With water dripping off our noses, we used the T shirt Kevin wore that morning to dry our faces and arms then started home, encountering flooded streets and intersections. Half an hour down the road, the pavement was dry. Let it be noted that Kevin can take his kilt off while driving down the interstate. What to do with 20 pounds of sopping wet wool in our truck cab presented yet another problem, but rest assured, less than 24 hours later, the darn thing is completely dry and back in the closet instead of on my lap!
Special thanks to Jayne and Dave Cutter who helped us throughout the
day and the rain. (Report submitted by Nancy and V.P. Kevin Stewart
of Region 4.)
