(from Gavin MacRoberts of Channel 14 in the Carolinas) LAURINBURG, N.C.
The first ever Scotland County Highland Games kicked off Saturday
at the John Blue Home in Laurinburg. Organizers decided to host the games
after the Highland Games held in a nearby county were discontinued.
For some, it was a chance to experience Scottish pride, even if theyre
not Scottish.
It is my first time to the games, and I am very, very impressed,
Scotland County resident Michael Chase said. Everyone seems to be
having a good time.
One of the organizers from the first Highland Games out at Grandfather
Mountain, which is one of the largest games in the nation, says he was
impressed by the community support for the games in Scotland County.
You have 46 different clan societies, sponsors, and that is really
good. Donald McDonald said. Im really pleased. This
is where I wanted it to happen many, many years ago.
The games hosted music and dancing, but at the heart were contests like
the turning of the caber, where the goal is not to throw it the farthest,
but to get the 120 to 160 pound pole to land vertically and then fall
away from the athlete.
That was only one of several competitions, including weight lifting.
Organizers say more than 7,500 people and six pipe bands attended the
Scotland County Highland Games.
Further reporting from North Carolina State Commissioner Gerald Daniel was also received:
"We were very proud to have brought the games along in just 8 months.
Clan MacLaren was the honored clan. I attended a talk on Sunday about
the alliances of the MacLarens with the Appin Stewarts. It was quite good.
We did get a new member with a strong promise of another and sold about
$200 in merchandise.
Thanks to Marie for doing a rush order in time for the games!" Gerald
